How family can both give you love and give you hate and how that forms children. [[Dolf de Kraai]] is made sympathetic by having a father that hates his existence and a mother that is not strong enough to cope. He outright rejects the compassion that Alfred gives him, and instead pivots to power, and when that doesn't work to groveling at those in power. Because [[Schor de Kraai]] needed to be better than his son, so does Dolf need to be better than anyone else. Because Schor never gave him love and the one person that did, his mother, died, he doesn't expect or want love to survive. But in the end we have a comparison between Alfred, surrounded by friends and a loving surrogate father going through pain, but surviving, and Dolf who is still friends with [[Hannes Snater\|Hannes]] and [[Wannes Snater]] as if nothing has really changed since their days at school. Still isolated, still not accepting love or compassion. And for Dolf it's even worse as he starts robbing stately mansions.
