HILVERSUM — Herman van Veen, die ooit bij de Vara begon maar later werkte voor Avro, KRO en Veronica, heeft een exclusief contract gesloten met de Vara-televisie.

Dat betekent niet alleen dat zijn theatershows daar het komende tv-seizoen zijn te zien, maar ook de grote tekenfilmserie Alfred J. Kwak.

Deze serie, 52 afleveringen van 25 minuten, is het grootste animatieproject dat ooit in Europa is geproduceerd en de duurste serie ooit in Nederland voorbereid.

De kosten van Alfred J. Kwak bedragen 36 miljoen gulden. De Vara, die de reeks met ingang van 24 december gaat uitzenden, betaalt 1,9 miljoen.

De serie is een co-produktie van Telecable Benelux TV, Vara, ZDF (Duitsland), het Spaanse TVE, en TV Tokyo. De reeks is inmiddels al verkocht aan Frankrijk, Italië en de Scandinavische landen.

In de serie, die door het 150 man sterke personeel van Telecable in Japan wordt getekend, komen ongeveer 260 verschillende personages voor. Ze zijn ontworpen door de Duitsers Harald Siepermann en Hans Bacher, die ook tekenden voor Who framed Roger Rabbit van Steven Spielberg. De muziek is van Herman van Veen en Erik v.d. Wurff.

Zestig procent van de kosten wordt gedekt door de coproducenten. Het resterende bedrag is het risico van het Amsterdamse bedrijf Telecable Benelux. Directeur Dennis Livson verwacht de kosten eruit te krijgen door verkoop aan onder andere Amerika. „Het moet de eerste keer zijn dat een Europees succes aan Amerika verkocht wordt.”

Volgens Livson is Alfred J. Kwak de grootste produktie die ooit in Nederland is voorbereid. Elke aflevering bevat een door Herman van Veen gezongen lied. Er zitten verwijzingen in naar milieubescherming, apartheid, drugs, enzovoort.

In de reeks zijn de stemmen van ten minste dertig Nederlandse acteurs te horen. Ook dat verschilt met voorgaande tekenfilmseries, waarin niet meer dan 5 tot 6 stemmen te horen waren.

Producent Livson maakt van Alfred J. Kwak ook een aantal specials en wellicht ook een bioscoopfilm.

Hij zegt de rechten bijtijds te hebben gekocht, want ook het Amerikaanse Disney-concern zou grote belangstelling gehad hebben voor de avontuurlijke eend Alfred J. Kwak.

HILVERSUM — Herman van Veen, who once started at VARA but later worked for AVRO, KRO and Veronica, has signed an exclusive contract with VARA television.

This means not only that his theatre shows will be shown there in the coming TV season, but also the major animated series Alfred J. Kwak.

This series, 52 episodes of 25 minutes each, is the largest animation project ever produced in Europe and the most expensive series ever prepared in the Netherlands.

The costs of Alfred J. Kwak amount to 36 million guilders. VARA, which will begin broadcasting the series on 24 December, is paying 1.9 million.

The series is a co-production of Telecable Benelux TV, VARA, ZDF in Germany, Spain’s TVE, and TV Tokyo. The series has already been sold to France, Italy and the Scandinavian countries.

The series, which is being drawn in Japan by Telecable’s 150-strong staff, features around 260 different characters. They were designed by the Germans Harald Siepermann and Hans Bacher, who also worked on Steven Spielberg’s Who Framed Roger Rabbit. The music is by Herman van Veen and Erik van der Wurff.

Sixty percent of the costs are covered by the co-producers. The remaining amount is the risk carried by the Amsterdam company Telecable Benelux. Director Dennis Livson expects to recoup the costs through sales to, among others, America. “It must be the first time that a European success is sold to America.”

According to Livson, Alfred J. Kwak is the largest production ever prepared in the Netherlands. Each episode contains a song sung by Herman van Veen. It includes references to environmental protection, apartheid, drugs, and so on.

In the series, the voices of at least thirty Dutch actors can be heard. That also differs from previous animated series, in which no more than five or six voices were heard.

Producer Livson is also making a number of specials based on Alfred J. Kwak and possibly a feature film as well.

He says he bought the rights in good time, because the American Disney corporation was also said to have had great interest in the adventurous duck Alfred J. Kwak.
