Harald Siepermann and Hans Bacher have regularly shown the characters that they have drawn to be smoking. While smoking was generally deeply embedded in Western culture and completely normalized, there was nontheless a very clear choice made to not portray any characters in the animated series as smoking. There was even an episode on recreational marijuana use scrapped, possibly also due to it's proximity to episode 6 and the subject of doping, which was also drug related. This can be considered a type of censorship.

While smoking was removed entirely from the animated series, several books, comics and original production materials still show characters smoking. Below is a list.
