The second part of the filmstrip book series contains faithful filmstrips of the first three episode of the animated series, "Op School" (lit. 'In School'), "De Kater" (lit. 'The Cat') and "De Olympiade" (lit. 'The Olympiad'). This book uses screengrabs from those episodes to tell its stories.
Story
Summary
- This book faithfully retells the story of Episode 4, Episode 5 and Episode 6 of the animated series. Please check the relevant pages for a more elaborate summary.
Op School
In winter, Alfred Jodocus Kwak prepares for his first day of primary school. Henk de Mol provides him with pants, a miner’s hat, and a red scarf. Outside, Dolf de Kraai, along with Hannes Snater and Wannes Snater, ambushes Henk and later Alfred with snowballs, mocking Alfred for having a mole as a father. When Alfred and Dolf begin to fight, Hannes and Wannes are asked to step in, but they leave Alfred behind.
During Bas Buldog’s history lesson on Polderstad, Alfred struggles to stay awake and dreams about the Middle Ages. Bas explains how people who were different were often expelled from the city and mentions an old well outside the city that served as the only water source for those who had been banished.
After class, Alfred tries to confront Dolf but accidentally wipes a dark substance from Dolf's beak, causing Dolf to flee in embarrassment. Alfred finds him sitting at the edge of a well, where a confrontation leads to Dolf tumbling down and injuring his wing. Alfred attempts to rescue him by lowering a rope but ends up falling into the well himself. Meanwhile, Krabnagel de Kater locates Alfred and Dolf trapped inside the well.
De Kater
Henk goes out to search for Alfred as it is getting very late. He stops by the school to check with Bas Buldog, but Bas has not seen him.
Meanwhile, at the bottom of the well, Dolf tries to frighten Alfred by recalling the earlier lesson about the spirits of people who were banished from the city and are said to surround the well. At that moment, Krabnagel hoists Alfred up with a fishing line. Just as Krabnagel is about to eat Alfred, Henk arrives and bites Krabnagel on the tail, throwing Alfred onto the winch. Krabnagel attempts to reach Alfred, but Henk pushes him over the edge, causing Krabnagel to fall on top of Dolf. Despite his broken wing, Dolf climbs back up to the top of the well with Krabnagel in pursuit, only for both to fall back down after Dolf grabs Alfred again. Krabnagel then shifts his attention to chasing Henk.
The pursuit leads them onto an ice-covered pond, where the thin ice can support Henk’s weight but not Krabnagel’s. As Krabnagel falls through the ice, he nearly drags Henk down with him. Later, an ambulance arrives to rescue Dolf and Alfred from the well. Back at home, Henk asks Alfred what happened, but Alfred, honoring a promise to Dolf, keeps the details to himself.
The next day at the hospital, Snel de Haas and Hannes Snater visit Dolf, who claims that Alfred pushed him into the well. As they leave, Snel and Hannes call Alfred a coward and a liar.
De Olympiade
As the summer holiday begins, teacher Bas informs his class that Polderstad will host its first triathlon. Snel, Alfred, and Hannes decide to participate, but Dolf is unable to join due to his broken wing. Henk trains Alfred to improve his skills, while Dolf attempts to train Hannes, though with little success.
After an intense bicycle race between Hannes and Alfred, both crash and injure themselves. Dolf takes Hannes to Flier de Gier, the local chemist, for some medication. There, he notices Stamp de Olifant purchasing a medication designed to enhance physical fitness. Seizing the opportunity, Dolf enlists Pikkie to steal the medication for Hannes.
The medication appears highly effective, and Hannes takes two pills before the triathlon begins. However, after the biking portion of the race, Hannes begins to slow down. He quickly consumes another pill, narrowly beating Alfred to the finish line. Just as Hannes is about to receive his accolades, he suddenly grows larger, and his beak lengthens, giving him an elephant-like appearance. Flier immediately identifies the medication as elephant medicine, and King Radbout de Derde disqualifies Hannes from the race.
Continuity
- This book retells the story of Episode 4, Episode 5 and Episode 6 of the animated series. Please check the relevant pages for more info.
- King Radbout de Derde loudly cheers for Alfred Jodocus Kwak, addressing him by name rather than shouting "Zet 'm op, eend!" or "You can do it, duck!" as he did in the animated series, which could've meant either Alfred or Hannes. This implies that he recognizes Alfred from the events of Episode 4.
Errata
- While this book improves on the quality of the screengrabs used, using bicubic scaling instead of nearest-neighbor interpolation like the previous book there are still cases of frame blending. This results in a doubling effect in the image.
- Some text clouds appear to be in the wrong order, creating confusing dialogues.
- On page 4 a line from Dolf de Kraai is missing.
Original Dutch Dolf: Waarom mogen wij de waarheid niet krassen?
Alfred: Nou het is waar dat Henk mij heeft opgevoed, maar waarom is dat zo gek?
Dolf: (Missing in the book, but included in the episode) Het is gek!
Alfred: En waarom dan wel?Translation Dolf: Why aren’t we allowed to caw[note 2] out the truth?
Alfred: Well, it’s true that Henk raised me, but why is that so strange?
Dolf: (Missing in the book, but included in the episode) It is strange!
Alfred: And why is that?

Production notes
The book opens with a foreword from Herman van Veen, co-signed tongue-in-cheek by Alfred Jodocus Kwak.
Translation Every day we receive enthusiastic responses to the first filmstrip book of Alfred J. Kwak, which was released in November 2006. Before you lies the second book, featuring three adventures of our big, little duck. In the first chapter, Alfred is bullied by Dolf the crow. During a fight instigated by Dolf, Alfred discovers a secret, which he, of course, keeps to himself. In the second part, Dolf and Alfred end up in an old well, and Henk must come to the rescue. The third chapter of this book centers around a triathlon that does not go as sportingly as it should.

The cover seems to be a traced over screengrab from Alfred K. Kwak Episode 6 featuring Dolf de Kraai coaching Hannes Snater for the triathlon. The screengrabs were from a Standard Definition quality source, likely the Disky DVD release from the same year. In this production, a distinct post-processing technique was applied to the screenshots, contrasting with the approach used in the previous installment. This new technique resulted in a more desaturated visual style across all panels. Notably, the effect is visible on the cover, where colors appear more muted and green-toned, particularly visible in the character comparisons between Hannes Snater and Alfred Jodocus Kwak. Alfred's colors exhibit a more subdued yellow, while Hannes' hues approach a greenish tone, emphasizing the overall shift in color treatment.
In Bas Buldog's history lesson, close-up shots of the map on the classroom wall are repurposed as flashback panels, with fuzzy panel edges to emphasize the effect. A cutout of Bas is positioned beneath three of his speech bubbles on page 6 to enhance this visual style. The original screenshot used for the cutout appears on the following page.
The page spread covering pages 14 and 15 features a darker background, emphasizing the darker atmosphere of the well scene. While the scene is technically longer, the darker background is only shown on these two pages.
Changes from the original
Changes from the episodes
The following lists all the changes between the Episode 4, Episode 5 and Episode 6 of the animated series and this book. The book remains largely faithful to the original episodes, though it includes additional dialogue in scenes where none was present. In some instances, dialogue is condensed to improve flow. Additionally, the sequence of certain frames has been rearranged.

- ↑ "Krassen" would translate to "cawing" in English, but can also be read as "scratching".
