Fictional locations

This section is concerned with all the locations from the animated series and the books. Below is a list of parts of the fictional world, mostly as it relates to the real world, which the story is based on. Not all parts of the world have a named equivalent within the story. Because of that, real-world geographical terms are used where necessary to describe regions without an established in-universe name.

Europe

This continent is never given a name in the series, but it contains all the countries based on real-life European countries.

Groot Waterland

(lit. "Great Waterland")

This country is based on the Netherlands. This country is home to most of the protagonists of the animated series. It contains Polderstad, the King's castle and Waterslag among other places.

Breed Rietland

(lit. "Wide Reedland")

This country is likely based on Germany. This assumption is based on the geographical location in the series, Herman van Veen's connection to Germany. Breed Rietland is the country Alfred Jodocus Kwak and Dolf de Kraai were born in.

Morena

For more information, check the main article

This location is likely based on Monaco. The city depicted in episode 50 is likely called Monte Carla (city), which is named in the song with the same name.

France

The song Monte Carla clarifies that the language they speak in the city of Monte Carla is Frands inferring that there is a France equivalence in this world.

Groot Musland

Groot Musland is the homeland of Igor and seems to be a monoethnic country as all currently known characters who have lived here are depicted as sparrows. The country also seems to have spies infiltrating Groot Waterland. Groot Musland is without a doubt based on Russia as the name and the accent of Igor's handler suggest.

Jippon

Jippon is the country visited by Professor Paljas von Pinguïn and Alfred Jodocus Kwak when the professor tries to sell his Flying Mill-space ship design. The country is fascinated by golf. Jippon is based on Japan and it's name is an amalgamation of the word Japan and the Japanese word for Japan, namely Nippon.

Honoloyo mountain range

Home of Malahidama and his family. Once considered a prime location for a ski resort by Kaspar Rokodil, Olaf Nijlpaard and Bart 'Bever' Beton.

Sinatra Eiland

(lit. "Sinatra Island")

Sinatra Island is a an island province governed by Gouverneur Alem Palem, with its exact constitutional status unknown. One of its main attractions is an inactive volcano, als known as the Lawsonberg. This location is most likely based on Sumatra, which also has several governors. It's fictional name is based on the late American singer Frank Sinatra.

Unnamed Eastern country

Ruled by Sjeik Alham, this country was shortly in the thrall of a terrible genie that had once, centuries ago, devestated their land.

Yale

A country known for it's centuries long conflict with its neighboring country Salam. Both countries have differing prevailing religions, however Yale's religion proclaims the goat as holy and the other the sheep. Groot Waterland's Professor Noal has a friendly relationship with its king, King xxx and Prins Shallaman as their judge advocate in their conflict with Salam. The conflict between Yale and Salam is in very broad strokes based on the Israeli–Palestinian conflict; the name Yale, pronounced in the Japanese version as 'Jeru', and Salam combining together to make Jerusalem.

Salam

A country known for it's centuries long conflict with its neighboring country Yale. Both countries have differing prevailing religions, however Salam's religion proclaims the sheep as holy and the other the goat. Salam is ruled by King xxx, who has a daughter named Princes Budor. The conflict between Yale and Salam is in very broad strokes based on the Israeli–Palestinian conflict; the name Yale, pronounced in the Japanese version as 'Jeru', and Salam combining together to make Jerusalem.

Zaira (Zonderwaterland)

This is the country Alfred Jodocus Kwak wants to dig canals for to help the people of this country with irrigation. The country was explicitely named in Wat wijzer met Alfred Jodocus Kwak, but is generally known throughout the franchise as "Zonderwaterland". Zaira's representative member of the International Business Corporation is an unnamed large spider. Zaira is almost certainly based on Zaire.

Thuisland

(lit. "Homeland")

The inclusion of Thuisland on this continent is not based on mentions in the animated series itself, but based on the inclusion of the character designs of Kwa and Blanche Wana in the story that's set on this continent. While their appearance was cut in the final episodes, Thuisland was mostly based on South Africa.

Het Land van de Piramiden

Het Land van de Piramiden is very likely to be based on Egypt, as both are famous for their Pyramids.

Dor Hongerland

Dor Hongerland is a book-only location that is mentioned a few times in De Droom van Alfred Jodocus Kwak. While it is highly possible this is a country set in Africa, and therefore likely on the Arlon continent, it is technically never confirmed.

This continent is never given a name in the series, but it contains all the places based on real-life North-American places.

Rollaria

Rollaria is described as the richest country in the world. Its currency is the roller, which is the principal currency used by countries for international payments. As a result, Rollaria exercises considerable control over the international monetary system. Rollaria is represented in the International Business Corporation by an unnamed bison.

Rollaria appears to be based on the United States. Its representative is depicted wearing Western wear and is an American bison, an animal native to North America and closely associated with the United States. The name of the roller also appears to be a play on the dollar, as roller, when pronounced in Dutch, bears a phonetic resemblance to dollar. The roller's role as the principal currency for international payments further parallels the prominent role of the United States dollar in international trade and finance.

South-America

This continent is never given a name in the series, but it contains all the places based on real-life South-American places.

Aroba

The island that moved a small amount every year and eventually turned out to be on the back of a turtle. This island is clearly inspired by the real life island Aruba.

This is a country with two parts separated by a mountain range between them, one part that is very rich in the North, and one part that is poor in the South. The capital of the poor half is called Droogstad and the capital of the rich part is called Spiegelstad. NEEDS REFINED.

The South Pole

The continent of Antarctica, which is home to the whales that Alfred Jodocus Kwak and Henk de Mol were looking for to save the herrings in Waterslag.

De zee-engte van Gebral

(lit. "The strait of Gebral")

This is the strait that Colonel Rang Pang was stationed at, while Alfred Jodocus Kwak and Henk de Mol tried to pass through in the direction of the South Pole on their rubber boat. This location is most likely based on the Strait of Gibraltar.

Marbo island

efore the island was destroyed by a volcanic eruption, a very bitter fruit called Marbo was found there. Shortly before the eruption, an extraterrestrial species visited the island and encountered Alfred Jodocus Kwak and Henk de Mol, who had stopped there while traveling to the South Pole in their rubber boat.

De Noord Meeuwenzee

De Paltz estate

This is Herman van Veen's and Harlekijn Holland's estate, which houses several theaters and the Herman van Veen Arts Center. The estate is open all days of the week from 8:00 to 18:00, and the Herman van Veen Arts Center Gallery and Gallery Café is open from Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00.

Het Land van Ooit

The now-defunct amusement park was aimed primarily at children and was themed around a fairy-tale world, with a particular emphasis on theatre. The park was founded by Marc Taminiau. Herman van Veen maintained close ties with the park and was appointed its first baron in 1989. The park was also associated with Alfred Jodocus Kwak. The character was married to Winnie Mandoline Wana there and was featured in an attraction at the park, as well as in at least one theatrical production, De Droom van Alfred Jodocus Kwak.
