Many characters living in Groot Waterland and Breed Rietland are ducks, including the main character Alfred Jodocus Kwak. While many ducks are seen swimming, they are rarely depicted as being able to fly, in contrast to blackbirds[1] and magpies[2][3].
Appearance
Ducks living in Groot Waterland and Breed Rietland generally have yellow or beige feathers, orange beaks, scaly legs, and webbed feet. Typically, not many ducks are seen wearing clothing, and when they do, it is often limited to accessories such as a hat, scarf, or bow. Some ducks, such as Henri Dropshot and Johnny Hollyday, wear partial outfits consisting of coats and accessories while leaving their lower bodies uncovered. The extent of clothing appears to correlate with a character’s proximity to society.
In Thuisland (also known as Atrique), most ducks have brown or black feathers instead. In a reference to apartheid, these characters experience racism both in their own country and abroad due to the color of their feathers. For example, Wannes Snater openly refers to Kwa Wana and his family as "blacks" while they are present. Other examples illustrate the deeply segregated society of Thuisland.[4][5] In the Dutch version of the animated series, these characters are voiced by African actors, which is evident through their accents.
Some ducks exhibit darker skin tones or unique markings as variations. Certain members of Alfred's brothers and sisters are colored differently from most other ducks.[6][7] Several female ducks, including Anna van de Polder and Winnie Mandoline Wana are shown to have brighter bellies.

The arms or wings of duck characters appear to shift between small, non-functional wings that do not enable flight and fully-formed four-fingered hands, often with feathers visible at the elbows. Their overall body structure remains consistent, featuring a rounded head atop a thin neck and a bean-shaped torso.
