Harald Siepermann and Hans Bacher frequently depicted the characters they designed as smokers. While smoking was deeply embedded in Western culture and widely normalized at the time, a deliberate decision must have been made not to portray any characters as smoking in the animated series.

Additionally, an episode about recreational marijuana use was reportedly scrapped, possibly due to its proximity to episode 6, which addressed doping and other drug-related themes. This choice may be considered a form of censorship.

A gallery of characters seen smoking

While smoking was removed entirely from the animated series, several books, comics and original production materials still show characters smoking. Below is a list, listed alphabetically.

Alfons Rokodil

Alfons Rokodil was shown smoking a cigar on his character sheet, which was also used for De wonderlijke avonturen van Alfred J. Kwak: Het grote voorleesboek as shown here.[1][2] He is also shown smoking a cigar in De wonderlijke avonturen van de eend Alfred Jodocus Kwak: Goedemorgen[3]

Alfred Jodocus Kwak

Alfred was shown smoking a cigarette in the comic De wonderlijke avonturen van de eend Alfred Jodocus Kwak: Vissen in troebel water[4] as shown here.

Bart 'Beton' Bever

Bart was shown smoking a cigar in his character sheet.[5] He is also shown smoking a cigar twice in De wonderlijke avonturen van de eend Alfred Jodocus Kwak: Goedemorgen[6] one of which is shown here.

Hannibal Nijlpaard

Professor Hannibal was seen smoking a cigar in De wonderlijke avonturen van de eend Alfred Jodocus Kwak: Vissen in troebel water[7] as shown here.

Henk de Mol

Henk de Mol was shown smoking a cigarette in De wonderlijke avonturen van de eend Alfred Jodocus Kwak[8] after Alfred Jodocus Kwak asks him how much money it would cost to build canals in a country with now water, which is shown here.

Henri Dropshot

Dropshot was shown smoking a cigarette in De wonderlijke avonturen van de eend Alfred Jodocus Kwak: Goedemorgen[9] which is shown here.

Johnny Hollyday

Hollyday was seen smoking a cigarette in his character sheet.[10]

Kaspar Rokodil

Kaspar was seen smoking a cigar in De wonderlijke avonturen van de eend Alfred Jodocus Kwak: Professor Paljas[11] as shown here.

Olaf Nijlpaard

Olaf Nijlpaard was seen smoking a cigar twice in De wonderlijke avonturen van de eend Alfred Jodocus Kwak: Goedemorgen[12], the first time, during the meeting in Beton Maatschappij office and later on during on the construction site of Groot Speelgoedland. The first instance is shown here.

Unnamed beaver foreman

This character was seen smoking in De wonderlijke avonturen van de eend Alfred Jodocus Kwak: Goedemorgen.[13]

Unnamed snail

This snail is shown smoking a pipe in De wonderlijke avonturen van de eend Alfred Jodocus Kwak[14] as Alfred Jodocus Kwak and Henk de Mol walk away. Based on his appearance and dialogue, it is likely that the snail is intended to be a parody of Sherlock Holmes, as he calls out to his companion Watson and wears a deerstalker hat. Holmes is also clasically depicted smoking pipe.
