Smoking in Alfred J. Kwak

Harald Siepermann and Hans Bacher frequently depicted the characters they designed as smokers. While smoking was deeply embedded in Western culture and widely normalized at the time, a deliberate decision must have been made not to portray any characters as smoking in the animated series. In fact after 1990, none of the characters appear smoking.

Additionally, an episode about recreational marijuana use was reportedly scrapped, possibly due to its proximity to episode 6, which addressed doping and other drug-related themes. It might also have been scrapped because depicting smoking characters wasn't allowed by the studio or the network, or advised against. This choice may be considered a form of censorship.

Preceding the release of the animated series in the Netherlands Dennis Livson claims in an interview that Alfred Jodocus Kwak despises smoking, possibly showing a 180 turn in production.

While smoking was removed entirely from the animated series, several books, comics and original production materials still show characters smoking. Below is a list, listed alphabetically.

Unnamed snail This snail is shown smoking a pipe in De wonderlijke avonturen van de eend Alfred Jodocus Kwak as Alfred Jodocus Kwak and Henk de Mol walk away. Based on his appearance and dialogue, it is likely that the snail is intended to be a parody of Sherlock Holmes, as he calls out to his companion Watson and wears a deerstalker hat. Holmes is also clasically depicted smoking pipe.
