Smoking in Alfred J. Kwak

Harald Siepermann and Hans Bacher frequently depicted the characters they designed as smokers. While smoking was deeply embedded in Western culture and widely normalized at the time, a deliberate decision was made not to portray any characters as smoking in the animated series.

Additionally, an episode about recreational marijuana use was reportedly scrapped, possibly due to its proximity to episode 6, which addressed doping and other drug-related themes. This choice may be considered a form of censorship.

A gallery of characters seen smoking

While smoking was removed entirely from the animated series, several books, comics and original production materials still show characters smoking. Below is a list, listed alphabetically.
