Alfred Jodocus Kwak is the main protagonist of the animated series Alfred J. Kwak, as well as the associated books and theater productions. Born in Breed Rietland as son of Johan Sebastiaan Kwak and Anna van de Polder, his parents and Alfred's brothers and sisters were killed in a traffic accident, leaving his foster father Henk de Mol to take care of him. The series follows Alfred's life as he grows up, settles in his iconic Clog house in Groot Waterland, and embarks on various adventures—often alongside Henk and characters like Professor Paljas von Pinguïn—with the aim of improving himself and the world around him.

Appearance

===The animated series Alfred is a yellow duck with an orange beak and flippers. Initially, he is depicted without clothing, but after being adopted by his foster father, Henk de Mol, he receives a pair of blue overalls and a red-and-dark-red striped wool scarf with tassels. The scarf remains with Alfred throughout the series and becomes an iconic, unchanging element of his character design.

As a child, Alfred is shown with several chest hairs and a scruffy patch at the back of his head. After he matures into adulthood, these features are replaced by three long hairs that curl forward from the top of his head. These are occasionally animated to reflect his emotional state.

Production background

The character of Alfred Jodocus Kwak was originally based on the protagonist of Drakestail, originally from a French fairy tale by Charles Marelle. The story was introduced to Herman van Veen by Annet Kossen, with whom he intended to create a picture book. This collaboration ultimately led to an adaptation of Drakestail and the creation of Alfred J. Kwak as a character. Van Veen named him 'Alfred' after Alfred Biolek, a TV-producer from Germany who introduced van Veen to the German audience. 'Jodocus' was derived from the name of a clown and 'Kwak' came from his experience of falling.
