"Achter tralies" (lit. 'Behind bars') is the first book released in a series of children's books called De wonderlijke avonturen van Alfred J. Kwak (lit. The wonderful adventures of Alfred J. Kwak) released in 3 series from 1989 to 1991. The first quarter of text of the "Achter tralies" is taken from De wonderlijke avonturen van de eend Alfred Jodocus Kwak: Goedemorgen, which was released in the same year. "Goedemorgen" was in turn a retelling of the story of the first episode and partially of the second episode of the Alfrd J. Kwak animated series. This book covers the second episode of the animated series and is accompanied with cels from that production.

Story

Summary

Johan Kwak and Anna van de Polder, along with their children—including Alfred Jodocus Kwak—have been forced to emigrate from their birthplace in Breed Rietland due to the construction of the theme park on their land. Guiding them is Henk de Mol, who offers the family shelter in his grandfather's mine house. As they depart, a heavy storm rains down on the theme park's grand opening behind them. The group takes a break as the rainclouds have past on, leaving a rainbow directly in their path to Groot Waterland.

They sleep in a hollow tree, wake up, and all-apart from Henk-take a plunge into the water. As the border to Groot Waterland comes into sight, they see the final hurdle to pass over; a car road. However, Alfred is distracted chasing a frog and runs back the way they came. Henk goes after the duckling while the rest starts moving up the slope to the car road. A car doesn't see the family in time and Alfred's parents and siblings die in a traffic accident. Henk is angry and sad, but he swears to always take care of Alfred.

A month passes and Alfred and Henk are living together in the mine house. Henk has been busy prepping the house for the arrival of Alfred's new friends celebrating his first month alive.

Production notes

The cover picture for this book was based on Alfred Jodocus Kwak's character sheet from the Character- and Color-Designs for Alfred J. Kwak book, 13/1 - 7

Achter tralies was the original production episode name for episode 2 and might be taken for this book on accident, instead of the original episode name, Het verjaardagsfeestje (lit. 'The birthday party').

The 13 cels used for the artwork on the inside of the book are all cropped to fit the frame of the book. On some of them the end of the artwork, especially for the background, can be seen. In 1989, during the production of Disney's Beauty and the Beast, Hans Bacher called in Daan Jippes to help him ink several covers for the De wonderlijke avonturen van Alfred J. Kwakbook series based on blue-pencil sketches by Harald Siepermann. These illustrations were about 20 x 20 cm in size.[2]

Changes from the original

Changes from the episode

The following lists all the changes between the original episode from the animated series and this book.
  • There's no rainbow in the original episode.
  • In the book the group sleeps in a hollow tree on their way to Groot Waterland. This original episode however presents only one day of the migration.
  • All scenes involving Alfons Rokodil, Olaf Nijlpaard and Bart 'Beton' Bever have been omitted or have their involvment go unmentioned in the book.
  • Alfred celebrates his first month of living, rather than his birthday as in the animated series.
  • Pikkie de Ekster accidentally swallows the shiny key after stealing it from the sparrow triplets.
  • Instead of sneezing, the large guard, actually verbally replies to Alfred when Alfred pokes him in the hallway of the king's castle.

Changes from the "Goedemorgen" boek

While the first part of this book takes most of its text from De wonderlijke avonturen van de eend Alfred Jodocus Kwak: Goedemorgen, several passages are missing or are changed.
  • In Achter tralies, the group sleeping in a hollow tree is expanded slightly by adding the presence of small spiders.
  • Achter tralies takes after the original episode the story is based on and says the traffic incident killing the family involved a big expansive car. Goedemorgen sticks with a truck. However, the chauffeur goes unmentioned in Achter tralies.
  • In Goedemorgen Pikkie de Ekster swallows a shiny marble, thinking it's candy, while in Achter tralies Pikkie want to steal the shiny key around the neck of one of the sparrow triplets.
