"Alfred J. Kwak - Jouw vriend voor het leven" (lit. 'Alfred J. Kwak - Your friend for life') is a DVD series covering all 52 episode of the animated series in Dutch. The episode are not presented in chronological order, but instead collected on themed DVDs, with all DVDs containing 3 episodes, except for Veiligheid & Gezondheid 3 (lit. "Safety & health"), which contains 4. While most storyarcs remain intact, some are divided over 2 of the DVDs. All volumes include unique artwork made by Harald Siepermann. This was release almost simultaneously with the Alfred J. Kwak - Dein Freund für's Leben DVD collection.
Production
Pre-release
On November 15, 2005 Harald Siepermann posted a sketch on his blogspot of Alfred Jodocus Kwak performing magic, revealing that he was working on the cover art for an Alfred J. Kwak collection DVD box. In the comments he also disclosed that there would be 4 DVD's with 3 episodes each, not in chronological order, but ordered by themes.[1] This eventually became the Alfred J. Kwak - Dein Freund für's Leben and Alfred J. Kwak - Jouw vriend voor het leven DVD collections, collecting all 52 for the first time as a Dutch release[note 1] in one series of DVDs.
Over the span of several months Siepermann would sketch and design several Alfred pictures to use on the cover of the 17 themed DVDs, which were completed by February 20th.[2] However, artwork for Veiligheid & gezondheid 3 (lit. "Safety & health 3"), depicting Alfred mockingly throwing a Nazi salute with a fake toothbrush moustache, would have to be changed in March.[3]
Release
In April of 2006, Siepermann explained on his blog, in response to many emails, that Disky had decided to postpone the release from an Easter release[4] to the second half of the year, to accompany a bigger advertising campaign to the release.[5] This bigger merchandise wave was to co-incide with the release of Alfred J. Kwak - Verboden te lachen and also included other merchandise, like the boardgame Het GROTE Alfred J. Kwak vrienden spel and the CD for Alfred J. Kwak - Afspraak is afspraak. Retailers received a marketing flyer and several pamphlets outlining the release schedule and business strategy. The flyer revealed that the releases would be in three waves, the first one containing all three Avontuur (lit. "Adventure") and Vriendschap (lit. "Friendship") themed DVDs in August of 2006, then in November Liefde (lit. "Love") and Natuur (lit. "Nature"), and finally in 2007 (no month given), Veiligheid & gezondheid (lit. "Safety & health") and Magie (lit. "Magic").[6] These plans apparently changed as the booklet included with the first wave of the DVDs revealed the three waves would include volume 1 of each theme, released August of 2006, volume 2 of each theme in November 2006 and volumes 3 (except for Magie) in 2007 (no month given).[7]
The first wave was eventually released on September 9th, 2006[8]. It included the first volumes of six themes, namely Vriendschap 1 (lit. "Friendschip 1"), Avontuur 1 (lit. "Adventure 1"), Veiligheid & gezondheid 1 (lit. "Safety & health"), Liefde 1 (lit. "Love 1"), Magie 1 (lit. "Magic 1")[note 2] and Natuur 1 (lit. "Nature 1"). The first volumes of the themed DVDs would show a release schedule of each of the three waves. Volumes 2 would forego the months and volumes 3 included the text '"Ook verkrijgbaar"' (lit. "Also available"). The second wave was released on May 2nd 2007, 7 months later than originally intended, and finally the third wave was released on October 11th 2007.[8]
Several years later, multiple 3 DVD box sets were released.
The product
The DVD packaging is colored with a patterned background containing a drawn element to match the theme (eg. a leaf on the Nature boxes). Unlike the German counterpart all the colors of each volume are slightly darker than the previous one, making it possible to make a rainbow pattern.[note 3] The box itself is transparant and all volume 1's will come with a sticker saying it includes a little booklet with coloring pages and puzzles. The back has blurbs for the episodes and three preview screengrabs cropped in widescreen. The back does not cover episode numbers. On all volume 1's a picture of Henk de Mol is shown, on all volume 2's a picture of Winnie Mandoline Wana and on all volume 3's it's Professor Paljas von Pinguïn. Each DVD would include an [[introduction by Herman van Veen on the inside, based on the theme on the inside, and a list of the other DVDs and other products related to the merchandise wave.
The DVDs themselves all start with a copyright warning, a Disky logo, then a short video of a movie set urging the viewer to only watch the original DVD by filmwereld.net, followed by a viewing guide showing this is for all ages. The DVD menu is a simple DVD menu with buttons for every episode included and a "SPEEL ALLES" (lit. "Play everything") button, with Spetter Pieter Pater (M-2) playing. There are no audio or subtitle options and no extra features. All the episodes are presented in their original 4:3. While it says stereo on the back of all of the DVDs, the audio is in fact mono.

Vriendschap
Alfred Jodocus Kwak reist de hele wereld over en beleeft allemaal leuke en soms ook spannende avonturen. Hij weet als geen ander hoe belangrijk het is om goede vrienden te hebben. Samen met je vrienden lukt alles veel beter en heb je meer plezier.Het is voor Alfred nooit zo moeilijk om leuke vrienden te krijgen. Hij helpt iedereen en is altijd vrolijk en aardig. Samen avonturen beleven met je vrienden is het leukste wat er is. Tenminste, zo denkt Alfred erover. Maar af en toe zijn er van die dieren die steeds maar pesten en vervelend doen. En om daarmee vrienden te worden is niet zo gemakkelijk. Dolf de Kraai is er zo een. Dolf plaagt Alfred steeds met zijn vader, omdat hij een mol is en geen eend. Alfred probeert zich er niets van aan te trekken, totdat hij ontdekt dat bij Dolf ook niet alles heel gewoon is.
Friendship
Alfred Jodocus Kwak travels all over the world and experiences all sorts of fun and sometimes exciting adventures. Better than anyone, he knows how important it is to have good friends. Together with your friends, you can accomplish a lot more and you'll have more fun.For Alfred, it's never very difficult to make nice friends. He helps everyone and is always cheerful and kind. Experiencing adventures together with your friends is the most fun there is. At least, that is how Alfred sees it. But now and then there are animals that keep bullying and being annoying. And becoming friends with them is not so easy. Dolf de Kraai is one of them. Dolf keeps teasing Alfred about his father, because he is a mole and not a duck. Alfred tries not to let it bother him, until he discovers that not everything about Dolf is entirely ordinary either.

Veiligheid & gezondheid
Gelukkig voelt Alfred Jodocus Kwak zich altijd kiplekker. Hij eet genoeg groen, rent veel en slaapt op tijd. Kortom, Alfred voelt zich fit en vrolijk. En dat is maar goed ook, want er zijn veel ongezonde dieren die zijn hulp hard nodig hebben. Alfred Jodocus Kwak verkoopt bijvoorbeeld kroos aan de eenden om geld in te zamelen. Hij reist daarna de hele wereld over en helpt, met het ingezamelde geld, dieren die in nood zijn.Toch zijn er ook dieren die vals spelen, zoals Dolf de kraai[sic] en de koning van Groot-Waterland. Dieren met ongezonde ideeën zorgen voor veel problemen. Zo vindt de koning van Waterland badderen in limonade heel lekker. Op deze manier kan hij zijn land niet verdedigen en voelen alle dieren zich onveilig. Alfred Jodocus Kwak wil dat iedereen gezond en veilig leeft en gaat daarom de strijd tegen het onrecht aan.
Health & safety
Fortunately, Alfred Jodocus Kwak always feels great. He eats enough greens, runs a lot, and goes to sleep on time. In short, Alfred feels fit and cheerful. And that is a good thing too, because there are many unhealthy animals that badly need his help. For example, Alfred Jodocus Kwak sells duckweed to the ducks to raise money. He then travels all over the world and, with the money collected, helps animals that are in need.Still, there are also animals who cheat, such as Dolf de Kraai and the king of Groot Waterland. Animals with unhealthy ideas cause many problems. For example, the king of Waterland thinks bathing in lemonade is very enjoyable. In this way he cannot defend his country, and all the animals feel unsafe. Alfred Jodocus Kwak wants everyone to live healthily and safely, and therefore fights against injustice.
