"De wonderlijke avonturen van Alfred J. Kwak" (lit. 'The wonderous adventures of Alfred J. Kwak') is a series of Dutch children's books, each based on one or two episodes of the animated series released in the Netherlands between 1989 and 1991 in 2 batches. The first two books were also released as mini books to be given away with Persil products in 1991 and to accomodate for the smaller format the story text on the pages was halved.[1] These books are accompanied with cels from the production.

The book De wonderlijke avonturen van Alfred J. Kwak: het grote voorleesboek, released in 2010, is not officially part of this series.

Production

The first six books of this series were released in 1989 in close proximity to their respective episode airdate on Dutch television, definitely predating episodes 5 and 6 and likely predating the first four episodes as well. As the books used animation cels from the animated serie, this was the first glimpse to the public as to how the show would look. The following year the rest was released, likely in two, but possibly more, batches, until in 1991 the final book came out.

The books feature unique cover artwork by Harald Siepermann and Hans Bacher. Daan Jippes helped ink the first six covers, uncredited.[2] Every book contains text in big font size on the left handside and pictures taken from animation cels from the animated series. These cels were mostly from the episodes that the book covers, but every now and again there will be one out of order or taken from another episode to fill in gaps.

Many of the books are based on a single episode or on a single story covering up to two episodes. For the first two books of this series the text for De wonderlijke avonturen van de eend Alfred Jodocus Kwak: Goedemorgen was used and altered to fit the format. The books faithfully covers all the episodes of the animated series up until episode 13 where the books jump ahead with De nachtmerrie to episodes 20 and 21 after which it jumps back to episode 17, skipping episodes 14, 15 and 16 and thus also the first half of the arc in which Alfred Jodocus Kwak and Henk de Mol travel to the South Pole to find whales to save the herrings. Because of this change, Vrienden uit de ruimte is taken from it's broader story context and presented as a stand-alone book. The next book, De inktvis picks up the storyline originally started in the episode Vissen in troebel water. De inktvis does retain the story beat of Alfred giving the cuttlefish the space food Henk and he had received from the space ducks in Vrienden uit de ruimte, slightly linking those two stories together after all. Notably, the book skip the entire Nationale Kraaienpartij arc and afterwards goes into episode 26 with De lieve sneeuwman.

An ad as seen in de Volkskrant in 19-10-1991 on page 16.

From the episodes of season 2 of the animated series, only episodes 41 and 42 were adapted into De draak.

In 1989 the broadcast service the VARA compiled the first three books and the second three books and released them as exclusives through the VARA's magazine, only available through transferring money to them.[3] Later on in 1990 there was also the release of a collector's sleeve re-release collecting the first 6 books for a reduced price. In 1991 the first two books find another re-release, but in a reduced size, causing the story to be even more abridged, given away with a Persil container of 1.25 kilo or 1.5 liter. For this release the original cover art by Siepermann, Bacher and Jippes was replaced by cels from the episodes.
